The Art Box

Codicote Winter/Spring 2019

Unlike other art classes we don't ask you to buy a whole lot of expensive equipment. In fact we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class. As we are all using the same materials it is easier for you to follow along. Also, you don’t have to worry about adjusting things to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

To give you space to work and allow Anne sufficient time to help everyone we limit the number attending each class to twelve. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £16 and payment is at the beginning of each class (cash please as we are unable to take cards).

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place email Anne on anne@theartbox.co.uk or give us a call on 01438 318398 (we have an answerphone and will always ring you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit!

Apples and Pears - Watercolour

  • Wed Jan 9 1:00 to 3:30

To start the new year we will be painting a heap of apples and pears. There are lots of varieties of apples and a few different pears so there will be lots of different colours and textures with a few ellipses thrown in for fun (I just know how you all love those!).

Tree Stump in the Snow - Watercolour

  • Wed Jan 23 1:00 to 3:30

The photograph we will be using was taken last time we had significant snow fall in Stevenage way back in 2013! There are wonderful textures on the tree stump for us to get our teeth into. Also, there is lots of snow for us not to paint!! The trick to making the snow look real is to paint lovely pale blue/lilac shadows on it and not to paint the snow.

Let’s Play with Texture - Watercolour

  • Wed Feb 6 1:00 to 3:30

I’ve been asked many times to run a class where you can play around with different techniques in watercolour painting. This class is it! We will be using salt, Cling Film, bleach and a bunch of other exciting things . You might not end up with what we would call a “finished painting” but you will have fun on the way!

Silver Birch Trees - Watercolour

  • Wed Feb 27 1:00 to 3:30

During this class using a photograph as inspiration we will be painting the beautiful texture that you get on silver birch trees. The trick is lots of darks some with soft edges and some with hard sharp lines and plenty of white paper – great fun!

Pancake Day – Watercolour

  • Wed Mar 6 1:00 to 3:30

As it’s pancake day on Tuesday 5 March I thought it would be appropriate to see what goes into a pancake – a pile of flour, eggs, milk plus a lemon for flavour. There will be lots of shapes and ellipses for you to tackle in painting these ingredients (oh those ellipses again!).

Old Door on Crete - Watercolour

  • Wed Mar 20 1:00 to 3:30

Thanks go to Emma for the photograph from her trip to Crete that we are working from this time – she was obviously thinking about painting when she took it! I like the freshness of the flowers and their bright colour set against the old door with its faded paintwork and the shadows are just wonderful!

Statue of Liberty – Watercolour

  • Wed Apr 3 1:00 to 3:30

This is a class where we will paint in only one colour – a tonal study to be posh! We will build up the layers of paint to give the statue form and structure. The photograph which we are using was given to me by Marcia – thanks Marcia! I have taken a small area of her original photograph and blown it up to allow us to focus on the statue.
