The Art Box

Stotfold Autumn 2018

We are pleased to say that Anne's surgical sabbatical is over and she is back to running her fortnightly classes at all the usual venues.

As always, unlike other art classes we don't ask you to buy a long list of expensive items. Instead we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class making it a great deal easier for you to follow along. So, no having to worry about adjusting what we are doing to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

We limit the number attending each of our classes to twelve to allow sufficient time and space for you to work. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £15 and payment is at the beginning of each class (cash please as we are unable to take cards).

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place email Anne on or give us a call on 01438 318398 (we have an answerphone and will always ring you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit!

Stone Steps at Appleby - Watercolour

  • Tue Sep 4 7:00 to 9:30

This picture has everything an artist could ask for - old wood, foliage and textured walls. There is lots for us to get our teeth into even though it is quite a simple scene. Different greens for the foliage, cracks in the wooden post and splatter for the textured wall – great fun! Thanks to Colin for his wonderful photo which I've had for a little while just waiting for the right moment, in fact it was scheduled for earlier in the year when I had to hastily cancel all classes due to my knee surgery.

Fresh Beetroot - Watercolour

  • Tue Sep 18 7:00 to 9:30

Beetroot on the face of it seems rather boring! However, if you actually look at the shape and colours they are great from a watercolourists point of view. The colours range from pink through to dark purple with the purple colours reflected in the stems and leaves. In this class we will be working from “life” rather than photographs.

Fungi and Leaves - Pen and Wash

  • Tue Oct 2 7:00 to 9:30

This class - also held over from the spring - is an opportunity for us to use black fine liner pens to give shape to the painting. The fungi we are working on are small cap mushrooms nestling in grass with dried leaves around them. The photograph was given to me by Chrissie who saw the scene and thought that it would make a good class. Thanks Chrissie!

Flowers, Blue Iris - Watercolour

  • Tue Oct 16 7:00 to 9:30

Nature has an amazing way of putting together complimentary colours so that they harmonize. In this class we will be painting Blue Iris using a mix of Cobolt Blue and Permanent Rose for the petals with Cadmium Yellow for the bright centres. We won't just be painting flowers in a vase in this class more an assortment of colours.

Venetian Mask – Watercolour

  • Tue Nov 6 7:00 to 9:30

There are a myriad of differing styles of Venetian carnival mask. We will be painting from a photograph for this class and using bright strong colours to depict the mask. We will also be using yellow ochre to depict the “gold” bits on the mask. The background of the painting will be a wet-in-wet loose collection of colour.

It's Christmas! - Watercolour

  • Tue Nov 13 7:00 to 9:30

Now is the time to paint this year's Christmas card! I thought we could use something very traditional as our subject this year – the mince pie. The design we will be working on will be a mixture of mince pies, holly and other Christmassy things to enable you to come up with your own personalised card.

Walnuts and Leaves – Watercolour

  • Tue Nov 27 7:00 to 9:30

The muted tonal values of browns and greys dominate the photograph we will be working from on this occasion. However, there is an interesting area of light green in the top right hand corner which we can use to bring life to our painting. The photograph which we are using was given to me by Lorraine – thanks Lorraine! I have taken a small area of her original photograph and blown it up to allow us to focus on the texture of the walnuts and leaves.

Two Flamingos – Watercolour

  • Tue Dec 11 7:00 to 9:30

Flamingos have long spindly legs which apparently bend the wrong way, the only other thing I know about flamingos is that they have a long neck! We will be working from a photograph of two birds feeding provided by Noelle. Thanks a lot Noelle! The colours we will use are Cadmium Red and Permanent Rose with a hint of Prussian Blue for the beaks and legs.
