The Art Box

Stotfold Spring/Summer 2019

Unlike other art classes we don't ask you to buy a whole lot of expensive equipment. In fact we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class. As we are all using the same materials it is easier for you to follow along. Also, you don’t have to worry about adjusting things to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

To give you space to work and allow Anne sufficient time to help everyone we limit the number attending each class to twelve. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £16 and payment is at the beginning of each class either by cash or card.

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place email Anne on anne@theartbox.co.uk or give us a call on 01438 318398 (we have an answerphone and will always ring you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit!

Thatched Cottage – Watercolour

  • Tue Apr 23 7:00 to 9:30

To show how diverse Stevenage can be the photograph for today’s class was taken within yards of the A1 Motorway. Tucked away off the road between Stevenage and Little Wymondley I saw this thatched cottage and thought it would make a good subject for a class. We will however have to use a little imagination and remove the twirly washing line from the garden but I’m sure we can manage!

Spring Blossom – Watercolour

  • Tue May 7 7:00 to 9:30

Blossom comes in many shades – the picture we will be using has white flowers. So, how do we paint white flowers? We paint round the flowers leaving the paper white. However, we then have to use some shadow colour to give the blossoms shape otherwise it will look like we just forgot to paint them!!

Rhinoceros – Watercolour

  • Tue May 21 7:00 to 9:30

It’s with thanks to Diana’s husband that we are painting an amazing Rhino in this class. In his photo taken on safari this big beast is so close we can see the patterns on his skin. There is also foliage and trees in the background to give the Rhino cover in the bush.

Rhubarb Leaves – Watercolour

  • Tue Jun 4 7:00 to 9:30

Whilst picking rhubarb from my garden last year it struck me that it would be a good subject to paint – yes I know I’m a little batty teaching watercolour makes me that way!! There are variations of red through to green in the rhubarb leaves with lots of texture for us to tackle.

It’s a Bee! - Watercolour

  • Tue Jun 18 7:00 to 9:30

In this class we will be doing something a little different – firstly we will be painting an agapanthus flower in detail on dry paper. Then after that using the watercolour wet in wet technique we will be adding a bee to our painting. With thanks to my sister for her wonderful photograph.

Sunset Silhouettes – Watercolour

  • Tue Jul 2 7:00 to 9:30

This is a beautiful subject for a tonal painting. The warmth of the sky against the dark of the silhouetted trees and boats makes for a challenging subject. We will begin with a graduated wash all over the paper and then use our rigger brush to paint in the detail. Thanks to Rosemarie for the use of another of her photos.

Summer Fruit Salad – Watercolour

  • Tue Jul 16 7:00 to 9:30

What’s better than some fresh summer fruits in a salad as a seasonal subject to finish off the term? Our painting will depend on the fruits available at the time of the class but you can be assured that there will be lots of colour.
