The Art Box

Ware Autumn 2019

Unlike other art classes we don't ask you to buy a whole lot of expensive equipment. In fact we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class. As we are all using the same materials it is easier for you to follow along. Also, you don’t have to worry about adjusting things to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

To give you space to work and allow Anne sufficient time to help everyone we limit the number attending each class to twelve. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £16 and payment is at the beginning of each class either by cash or card.

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place it’s best to email Anne on anne@theartbox.co.uk otherwise call her on 07845 930580 (leave a message if you don’t get through and Anne will call you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit!

Harvest Mouse – Watercolour

  • Fri Sep 13 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Sep 14 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Sep 14 1:00 to 3:30

To start off this session of classes we are painting a Harvest Mouse. These little creatures will be around at this time of year as they feed on the long grass and reeds of Autumn. This will be another class in my theme of limited palette paintings, this time we will be using raw sienna with a touch of burnt umber and alizarin crimson for the cheeks.

Devon Quay – Watercolour

  • Fri Sep 27 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Sep 28 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Sep 28 1:00 to 3:30

I thought that it was about time we painted another water scene. Using a photograph of Fremington Quay in Devon given to me by Sue (you know who to thank!) we will be painting the Quay. It’s a lovely scene with wet sand, sky and hills in the distance so plenty to keep us occupied.

Here’s Looking at You! – Watercolour

  • Fri Oct 11 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Oct 12 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Oct 12 1:00 to 3:30

Following on from the rhinoceros we have another photograph from Diana. This time it is Logan the owl from Coda Falconry Lee Valley who Diana actually had perching on her hand at one point! In this class we will be tackling feathers using varying amounts of water to produce both soft and hard edges. Also, there are the expressive eyes to paint!

Gourds – Pen & Wash

  • Fri Oct 25 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Oct 26 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Oct 26 1:00 to 3:30

One of the fruits available at this time of the year are Gourds. They are in the main ugly bumpy things – this makes them very interesting to paint! We will be washing in the gourds shapes with watercolour paint and then using black pen to enhance their different forms and textures.

Christmas Card - Watercolour

  • Fri Nov 8 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Nov 9 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Nov 9 1:00 to 3:30

It’s the time of year once again for producing the painting that might become this year’s Christmas card! We will be doing something a little different this time – going on from the textures in watercolour class I ran earlier this year we will be painting a snow scene. To get a really moody sky to show off the white snow we will be painting a dark grey sky and using the salt technique to suck out the moisture from our paper.

Julius Caesar – Sanguine Pencil

  • Fri Nov 22 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Nov 23 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Nov 23 1:00 to 3:30

Back to basics in this class. Sanguine pencils are a light orangey brown colour and were preferred by amongst other artists Leonardo da Vinci. In the style of the “old masters” we will be drawing from a photograph a statue of Julius Caesar. Our drawing will consist of various forms of mark making to highlight the shape and form of the statue.

Lonely Puffin – Watercolour

  • Fri Dec 13 1:00 to 3:30
    Sat Dec 14 9:30 to 12:00
    Sat Dec 14 1:00 to 3:30

A bit of fun for the last class this session. A lonely puffin sitting on the rocks staring off into the distance. Ahhhh…. We will be painting in a looser style in this class trying to get the essence of the bird and not necessarily an exact copy of the photograph.
